The Government has legislated the compulsory registration of all marriages for both the residents and non-residents of India to make the marriage legal. Besides the customs, rituals of different land and religion, the legal standing of marriage is also vital for various reasons. In Sikkim, the process of marriage registration involves several steps and adhering to the specific legal requirements under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, or the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 , depending on the religion of the couple.

Through this application, marriage certificate will be issued under two categories:

  1. Intended / Court marriage
  2. Marriage registration for already married couples

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Age : The groom must be at least 21 years old, and the bride must be at least 18 years old at the time of marriage.
  2. Marital Status: Both parties must be unmarried or legally divorced.
  3. Mental Capacity : Both parties should be of sound mind.

Intended / Court marriage

To obtain the marriage certificate, one of the parties should be a permanent resident of India to be eligible.

  1. Submit Application : Register/ Login and fill in the application and upload the necessary documents.
  2. Notice of Intended Marriage : On submission and approval of the application, a notice is posted on the notice board of the District Collectorate. A notice of one month is provided to raise any objections to the marriage.
  3. Registration : If no objections are raised within 30 days, a date is fixed and announced to the parties. The marriage is registered in the presence of the Marriage Officer and three witnesses on the said date.
  4. Marriage Certificate : After the marriage is solemnized, a certificate of marriage is issued by the Marriage Officer.

Marriage registration for already married couples

  1. Submit Application : Register/ Login and fill in the application and upload the necessary documents.
  2. Police Verification (PVR) : On submission and approval of the application, PVR shall be processed.
  3. Marriage Certificate : After the PVR is successful, a date is fixed and announced to the parties. Both parties, along with 2 witnesses, must be present before the said District Magistrate on the said day and a certificate of marriage is issued.

Application Status

The User can check the status of service application in any of the following ways:

  1. An intimation of status change will be sent to their email id and through SMS.
  2. Log in to the application and check the status.

Fee Structure:

  • Marriage Registration: Rs 100/-
  • Police Verification: Rs 200/-
  • Transaction Fee: Rs 30/-
